Deathnote movie - US Remake with Gaspard Ulliel to star as Light

The highly successful Deathnote movies are getting the Hollywood treatment. Handsome french actor Gaspard Ulliel will star as the power crazed Light Yagami.

Deathnote is a popular manga series about a powerful notebook that kills people whose names are written in it. This book was accidentally dropped in to Earth from a different world by a death god. Light, a uni student stumbles across this book and sees the instructions on how to use it. He doesn't believe it, he tests it out by writing a criminal's name and finds out the criminal dies from the news. He tests it out again and finally believes the Deathnote's power. Light become crazed and wants to create a new world with no crime. He starts killing people like crazy and the genius detective L is on his tail.

I always shudder when I hear Hollywood is remaking a Japanese anime/movie. The Japanese Deathnote movies were brilliant! From script to set design and casting. Everything was believable and intelligent. I thought Kenichi Matsuyama and Tatsuya Fujiwara were brilliant in this cat and mouse game. Hollywood hasn't got a good record with Japanese film remakes, look at Dragon Ball Z, Speed Racer...

But! With the announcement that Gaspard is playing Light, I have hope that this film might be just as good as the Japanese one. Gaspard is a brilliant actor (one of my faavourites). He absorbs himself in the role and takes his art seriously. I have loved every movie I have seen him in. Gaspard can play complex characters (e.g. Hannibal) so I think he will bring an interesting dynamic and darkness to Light Yagami.

Now I'm quite curious to find out who will be playing the oddball genius detective L. I have no idea who they should cast. Maybe Johnny Depp. That would be an interesting combination.

Production hasn't started yet but they plan to release this film in 2012.

Let us know what you think about Gaspard being cast as Light.

Karaoke Kraze

Karaoke is always a fun night with your friends. Singing out of tune to your favourite songs, eating lots of fried food. What more could you want!

Did you know the karaoke machine was invented in Japan 40 years ago by Japanese muso Daisuke Inoue. Karaoke became so popular in Japan that it spread across Asia in the 80’s and then to the rest of the world. Today, in the Philipines there are karaoke booths at shopping centres. If you feel that you want to sing, you can just pop in to the booth. The booths kind of look like fancy portable toilets. I think only 2 people will be able to fit in it.

We all have favourite songs to sing at Karaoke! I particularly like to sing James Blunt! Surprisingly, I cannot hit the high notes that he sings in his hit songs like ‘You’re beautiful’. Other favourites of mine are Utada Hikaru, Rain, Britney Spears, Spice girls. What are your favourite songs?

I went surfing on the net to find out what is the top karaoke song. On this website uskaraokealliance.com they listed the top 500 songs of all time. Interestingly the songs in the top 5 spots are songs I have never sung.

5. Alannah Myles – Black Velvet
4. Journey – Don’t stop believing
3. John Travolta, Olivia Newton John – Summer Nights
2. Carrie Underwood – Before He Cheats

And number 1 – Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock – Picture

What would you rank as the number one karaoke song of all time?

Happy singing everyone!!

Veteran Hong Kong Actor dies 5 times in 5 TV dramas over 24 hours

Hong Kong actors are the most hardworking actors in the world I reckon. Veteran actor Law Lok-Lam, 63, was seen dying 5 times on 5 different TV dramas over 24 hours last week.

Here are the TV shows and how his character was killed off:
Grace Under Fire - Died during martial arts battle
Fate to Fate - Vomited blood
Police Station No. 7 - death was mentioned, no scenes of it
Virtues of harmony - death was mentioned, no scenes of it
Relic of an Emissary - Emperor died of illness

When Hong Kong actors characters are killed off in a TV series, they are given a red envelope with money for good luck. Law got lots of red envelopes for 5 character deaths.

He said in a youtube video posted by TVB (Hong Kong Broadcaster), "When I get a job, I don't care if my character in the drama will die. If he is supposed to die, he should go on and die,"

Some internet postings have reported that his daughter was upset buy his multiple deaths. I guess it would be disturbing if in one day, every channel you flipped to - you saw your father dying in a different way.

Law continues "Why would dying in a drama matter? It's not for real. So my daughter, you shouldn't be unhappy. The most important thing is I've done my job well,"

A TVB spokesman quoted by the Post said: "It was purely a coincidence that Law died five times."

Rain is currently no. 1 on Time's 100 most influential people list

Korean superstar Rain has done it again! He's currently no. one of Time's 100 most influential people. The voting polls closes on April 14, so be sure to get your vote in!

Currently Rain is leading with 194,774 votes. Coming second is Hong Kong superstar Jay Chou with 100,193 votes. Rain is ahead of the pack by quite a large margin. Other people in the top 100 include Barack and Michelle Obama, Julian Assange, Lady Gaga, Betty White, Steve Jobs. It is quite brilliant that Rain is in the no. 1 position amongst these influential people.

Interesting that they grouped Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert together, they are currently in position number 28. A few years ago in 2007, Stephen Colbert announced a rivalry with Rain on his TV show! Stephen campaigned to be number one on Time's 100 most influential people list. His campaign included him making and singing a korean track!! Stephen was copying Rain's 'How to avoid the sun' music video. It's a bloody fantastic clip. Stephen got the wardrobe right and cool dance moves.

Unfortunately Stephen lost and Rain WON!!! Rain came first on Time's web poll which is different to the magazine's poll.

Stephen invited Rain to come on his show to do a dance off. Stephen put in a good effort but Rain being a brilliant dancer, danced Stephen out of this world!!

GO RAIN! I hope you take out the title this year!

Awesome pictures of Flowery Buns for the Qingming Festival April 2011

Martian Virus TV - Girl who hasn't brushed her teeth for 10 years!! (oh I feel bad for her boyfriend)

There is this weird korean TV show called 'Martian Virus', where guests share their odd stories. When you get the chance you should youtube Martian Virus to watch previous guests on the show. Some guests include a man marrying his pillow girlfriend (This is quite common in Japan and Korea is catching on). Another guests claims her diet consists of chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. The odd thing about this story is - she's very slim. How can someone who claims to eat 1.2 tonnes of chocolate be a size 4-6.

The story I want to talk about is this 20 year old woman Ji Hyun Ji. She claims to have stopped brushing her teeth 10 years ago. The last time she brushed her teeth was when her mum brushed it for her. She's so lazy!!!!! I can't believe it.

She says "I do not understand why people should brush their teeth, as it is not like others will look into your mouth. As food scrapples piles on, they will actually protect my teeth"

I'm dumbfounded... where do you begin to argue with her logic

She goes on saying, she only wipes her front teeth with a tissue on special occasions.

With the help of a dentist and experts on the show, they will try to convince this woman to brush her teeth!!

I can't imagine what her breath and teeth will be like. I'm quite horrified - I'm really fussy about taking care of my teeth.

Japanese men arrested for growing hemp in Tokyo Park

The natural disasters in Japan have been a focal point for news the past few weeks. There have been many tragic and heroic stories. So when I came across this story, I felt it was a bit random.

On the 4th of April, 2 men were arrested for growing marijuana in Tokyo Park. One of the men, Kentaro Adachi, aged 23 explained to the Police 'It was for our own personal use'. LOL! He's very frank and didn't beat around the bush.

The men planted the hemp in the park where they would care for it at night time. The 1.8 metre tall plants were spotted by a park employee who reported it to police. 1.8 metres is not discrete at all! They had grown 35 of these trees!

When asked why the men chose to grow hemp in a public place, they were quoted as saying they used to play there as children so they knew the area well.

It appears that these 2 men wanted to be caught and weren't fussed when they were caught.

Singapore Government - The Couple Matchmaker

It's hard finding someone you like in the jungle dating scene, let alone your soul mate. Your family can pester you about settling down and starting a family, now imagine your government hassling you too!

The Singaporean government is planning to do just that - helping unmarried citizens find their match. You must be thinking why would the government want to play matchmaker? The reasons: The Singaporean government is concerned about the country's low fertily rate & how young people are reluctant to get married and have kids.

I think people are just enjoying single life and focusing on their careers before they say 'I do' and produce offspring.

Don't you think it is a bit inappropriate for the goverment to meddle with people's personal lives? On the other hand, they might do a brilliant job at matchmaking - they do have information about the whole population.

The specifics about how the Singaporean goverment matchmaking policy haven't been revealed yet. With their great concern about fertility rate, there will be lots of talk in parliament.

Here are some stats: The percentage of single young women aged 25-29 reached 62% in 2010, this is a huge increase from the 46% of single women in 2000. Interestingly the article didn't quote the percentage of single men in Singapore. Sounds like Singapore will be a great place to meet lots of single people!

What do you guys think? Would you like the government to interfere in your dating life?

Funny Office Pranks!

Top 3 Hoaxes of all Time

I was surfing the net and came across this website www.museumofhoaxes.com where they tallied the top 100 April Fool’s day hoaxes of all time. I’m going to go through the top 3:

#3: Instant Color TV

1962: In 1962 there was only one tv channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station's technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that, thanks to a new technology, viewers could convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their tv screen. Stensson proceeded to demonstrate the process. Thousands of people were taken in.

#2: Sidd Finch

1985: Sports Illustrated published a story about a new rookie pitcher who planned to play for the Mets. His name was Sidd Finch, and he could reportedly throw a baseball at 168 mph with pinpoint accuracy. This was 65 mph faster than the previous record. Surprisingly, Sidd Finch had never even played the game before. Instead, he had mastered the "art of the pitch" in a Tibetan monastery under the guidance of the "great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa." Mets fans celebrated their teams' amazing luck at having found such a gifted player, and Sports Illustrated was flooded with requests for more information. In reality this legendary player only existed in the imagination of the author of the article, George Plimpton.

#1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

1957: The respected BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in. Many called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplomatically replied, "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."

Very funny prank by the BBC. I would believe anything the BBC says! If they did a prank like that today, i would certainly be fooled easily.
